User:David Schaich/Oaxaca protest report
From SP Boston
We had a good turnout at the Mexican consulate on Thursday, 2 November, the Day of the Dead, to protest the Mexican government's attempts to suppress the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO) and restore Oaxaca's corrupt and dictatorial PRIista Governor Ruiz to power. There were 125-150 people there, from as far away as Amherst and Providence, especially impressive for an impromptu action called just a few days in advance.
We began assembling around 4:00 and marched around the building a couple of times starting at 5:00. There were many powerful and creative signs and banners, including black crosses with the names of all those killed by Ruiz's thugs. Some protesters attempted to enter the building to deliver a statement to the Consulate, but were repulsed by the police. Around 5:30, some headed off to Cambridge to confront the Mexican Consul-General as he gave a talk. I had to head back to BU and didn't join them.
Several Socialist Party of Boston members attended the protest and marched with the crowd around the building. We brought along a couple dozen copies of Raul Cano's statement on Oaxaca to hand out, which vanished very quickly -- we should have brought more!
There's more information at the Boston Indymedia, which also includes a photo of yours truly, copied below.
There were also reports of the protest in The Metro andThe Harvard Crimson.
