From SP Boston
In 2006, the migrant workers' rights movement celebrated International Workers Day with a massive nationwide strike and boycott. Authorities struck back by intensifying rhetorical and physical attacks on immigrants, further militarizing the border, and expanding raids and deportations such as the recent raids in New Bedford.
In response, a national day of action was called on May Day 2007, to demand an end to the raids and deportations, protection of all workers' rights, and dignity and legalization for all migrants.
Over a thousand immigrants rights and labor activists came out to two Boston-area demonstrations. The Socialist Party of Boston rallied and marched with hundreds from the Common to Copley square, while a simultaneous rally of similar size was held in East Boston.
Although smaller than last year's historic demonstrations, the rally featured feeder marches from several communities and spurred the creation of rapid response networks to prevent and react to future raids.
The following Saturday, the Socialist Party of Boston joined thousands of revelers at the 29th annual Wake Up The Earth festival in Jamaica Plain. A celebration of community, labor and the environment, the festival was once again a great success and good time for all.
