From SP Boston
On 26 June 2007 the American Civil Liberties Union held a March To Restore Law and Justice in Washington DC, as well as a simultaneous local action in Boston for those unable to make it down to DC.
Thousands gathered in Washington to deliver over 250,000 petition signatures, including over 100 on a pair of buses from Boston. At the same time a few dozen braved the scorching sun and temperatures over 90 degress to march from the ACLU of Massachusetts office at Congress St. by High St. to government center. Four Socialist Party members joined the local march, two of whom had tried to get down to Washington but hadn't made it. Chas H. was interviewed by the Boston Phoenix before the march, and David S. was interviewed by the Boston Weekly Dig at the rally afterwards.
Led by activists in orange jumpsuits, some carrying a coffin for the rule of law and others with a model rendition plane, we carried signs calling for the closure of Guantanamo Bay, ending torture (?!), and the restoration of habeas corpus on the silent (despite the efforts of Chris F.) march. We gained largely positive responses from the lunchtime crowds in the area, who received flyers and free one-way plane tickets to Gitmo.
Some pictures of the actions in both Washington and Boston can be found here. A couple that include SP members are below.
